Questions 1–10: Long Questions

1. Explain the system of proto-industrialisation.

Answer /
Proto-industrialisation developed before factories became common. Merchants needed large quantities of goods for international markets. Since urban guilds controlled production, merchants went to the countryside. They provided raw materials to peasants and artisans and collected finished goods. Rural families participated in production along with agriculture. This system increased commercial production and prepared the way for factory-based industrialisation.

2. Describe the major changes brought by industrialisation in Britain.

Answer /
Industrialisation changed the organisation of production in Britain. Factories expanded, machines were increasingly used and production increased. The cotton textile industry grew rapidly. Steam power became important in factories and transport. Large numbers of workers moved to industrial towns in search of employment. However, workers also faced long working hours, low wages and uncertain employment.

3. Explain the impact of industrialisation on workers.

Answer /
Industrialisation created new employment opportunities but also created difficult working conditions. Workers often worked for long hours and received low wages. Employment could be seasonal and uncertain. Women and children were also employed in factories. Workers sometimes opposed machines because they believed machines would reduce employment. The Luddites are an example of such resistance.

4. Explain the decline of Indian textile exports during British rule.

Answer /
Indian textiles were famous in international markets for their quality. However, British industrialisation changed the situation. British machine-made cloth was cheaper and entered Indian markets. At the same time, British policies restricted Indian textile exports. East India Company agents controlled many Indian weavers and forced them to follow Company conditions. The decline in demand and increasing competition weakened the Indian handloom sector.

5. What role did the East India Company play in controlling Indian weavers?

Answer /
The East India Company appointed gomasthas to supervise weavers. These agents provided advances to weavers and expected them to produce cloth according to Company requirements. Weavers were often prevented from selling their products to other buyers. The Company tried to secure a regular supply of textiles at favourable prices. This system reduced the freedom of many weavers.

6. Discuss the growth of Indian industries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Answer /
Indian entrepreneurs began establishing modern industries in different parts of the country. The first successful cotton mill in Bombay was established by Cowasji Nanabhoy Davar in 1854. The jute industry developed in Bengal. Entrepreneurs such as Jamsetjee Tata invested in industries. TISCO was established in 1907. During the First World War, Indian industries received more orders because imports from Britain declined.

7. Why did some industrialists prefer manual labour over machines?

Answer /
Machines were expensive to purchase and maintain. They were also not always suitable for producing goods with different designs and changing fashions. Hand workers could produce specialised and small quantities of goods more flexibly. In industries where demand was seasonal, hiring workers was sometimes more economical than investing in machines.

8. Explain the importance of the First World War for Indian industries.

Answer /
The First World War created new opportunities for Indian industries. British factories were occupied with producing war-related goods, so imports into India declined. Indian factories were asked to supply goods such as uniforms, jute bags and other products. Existing factories increased production and new workers were employed. Thus, the war gave an important boost to Indian industrial production.

9. How did advertisements help in creating markets for industrial goods?

Answer /
Industrialists used advertisements to attract customers and distinguish their products from competitors. Labels, calendars, posters and attractive images were used to create brand identity. Advertisements sometimes presented products as symbols of quality, modernity and trust. In colonial India, advertisements also used images of gods, emperors and nationalist symbols to appeal to consumers.

10. “Industrialisation did not mean only the growth of factories.” Explain.

Answer /
Industrialisation involved changes in many forms of production. Before factories, merchants organised production through rural households and artisans. Even after factories developed, hand production continued in many sectors. Some products required skilled workers and specialised designs that machines could not easily provide. Therefore, industrialisation included both factory production and the continued development of small-scale and hand-based production.
